Chinese manganese alloy prices consolidate at firm levels

BEIJING (Metal-Pages) 15-Jan-10. Chinese manganese alloy prices have consolidated at firm levels this week on a strong market for imported manganese ores and tight availability of alloys caused by power shortages.
Standard 65/17 grade silico-manganese is trading at RMB8,300-8,700/tonne depending on regions and delivery terms.

The power supply in major producing areas is worsening, as local governments are restricting power supplies to ferro-alloy sectors in a bid to ensure enough electricity for household use," said a ferro-alloy trader.
Market players say that there could be higher offers made by producers from now on as tight conditions keep them upbeat about the future, despite ordinary consumer demand.
The market for imported manganese ores, the main raw material for alloys, has remained firm this week, with 44% grade Australian lumps steady at RMB62-64/mtu in the spot market.
“The supply of manganese ores at ports is tightening as importers are running down their stocks, so the downside is finite in view of the active market for alloys and strong offers made by foreign miners,” an ore dealer commented .
Exports of 65/17 grade silico-manganese have climbed again to $1,500-1,550/tonne basis FOB from $1,470-1,520/tonne, in line with firming domestic prices and higher offers made by overseas competitors, such as in India.
Meantime, high carbon ferro-manganese is also enjoying an stable and strong market, with 65% Mn grade material at RMB7,800-8,200/tonne depending on regions and delivery terms. Exports of 75% Mn grade material are at $1,600-1,650/tonne FOB, from $1,550-1,600/tonne.
Only 20% of ferro-manganese capacity is running in Guangxi province due to power rationing and unusually low temperature, industry sources said.
