HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Deutsche Bank AG (DB) said Thursday it has agreed to buy 20% of Hanoi Building Commerical Joint Stock Bank of Vietnam, as Germany's largest lender by market value seeks to expand its Asian business into one of the region's fastest-growing economies.


Deutsche Bank and Habubank, as the Vietnamese lender is known, are also exploring potential ventures in credit cards, wealth management and other investment products. The terms of the deal weren't disclosed. The deal is subject to regulatory approval.


Currently, foreign ownership of Vietnamese banks is capped at 10%, but that capis under review as Vietnam prepares for more competition in its banking sector after becoming a member of the World Trade Organization.


In January, HSBC Holdings PLC of Britain said it plans to double its stake in Vietnam Technological & Commercial Joint-Stock Bank to 20% as soon as the rules are changed.


United Overseas Bank Ltd., Singapore's second-largest bank by market cap, last month agreed to buy 10% of Vietnam's Southern Commercial Joint Stock Bank for about S$46 million and has an option to double its holding.


Habubank has 21 branches in the country.

HONG KONG, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Deutsche Bank <DBKGn.DE> said on Thursday it agreed to buy 20 percent of Vietnam's Hanoi Building Bank (Habubank), joining a group of global lenders who are expanding in the fast-growing country.


Deutsche did not disclose financial terms of its arrangement with Habubank, which had assets of 12.3 trillion dong at the end of September 2006.
