United Overseas Bank (UOB) has acquired a 10 percent stake in Vietnam's Southern Commercial Joint Stock Bank for 46 million Singapore dollars (30 million US), the Singapore lender said.

In a statement, UOB said the investment would allow the bank to tap opportunities in the booming Vietnam economy, which was the fastest growing in Southeast Asia in 2006 and the latest member of the World Trade Organisation.

"This investment in Southern Bank is in line with UOB's mission to build a premier bank in the Asia Pacific region," the bank said.

"With its recent accession to the World Trade Organisation, Vietnam is primed for growth."

UOB will provide technical support and assistance to the Vietnam bank as a strategic shareholder, the statement said.

Vietnam's economy grew 8.2 percent in 2006, the fastest in Southeast Asia and investors see the once war-torn country as one of the most attractive markets in the world
